GCTU International Students Receive Special Orientation
In a concerted effort to ensure a smooth transition for GCTU International Students, the Office of the Dean of Student Affairs has organized a one-day special orientation for its fresh international undergraduate students on 12th March 2024 at the Video Conference Room, main campus, Tesano.
The event which took place was aimed at preparing these students for their academic journey, equipping them with vital information to excel, familiarize with the various faculties and departments and navigate the University community.
Speaking at the event, the Dean of Students Affairs, Dr. Michael Nana Owusu Akomeah, expressed his profound gratitude to the students for attending the orientation. He said, “a general orientation has been done already, but this is a special one for you, international students, to familiarize yourselves with the campus.”
The Director of Finance, Mr. Ernest Yaw Apraku, also took the opportunity expatiate on the School Fees Payment System & Student Accounts and shed light on the payment process at the bank. He added that, students can only register when they meet the threshold of 50% payment. Mr. Apraku indicated that the practice of students submitting fake receipts from the bank to the Accounts office is now a thing of the past as a system has been installed to synchronize information straight from the bank.
The Head of Business Development, Centre for Strategic Business and Professional Development (CSBPD), Ms. Cynthia Ampadu-Boateng, indicated that CSBPD is a dynamic hub committed to fostering business growth, coordinating and enhancing income-generating activities within the University. She added, that CSBPD creates new business ideas, improves business growth, maintains business growth, cultivates and maintains strategic partnerships, offers innovative educational programmes and creates new businesses.
An officer from the Directorate of University Relations (DUR), Mr. Cosmos Kaguah, presented on behalf of the Director, Dr. Nusrat-Jahan Abubakar. He highlighted the responsibilities of the Directorate towards international students and the services the Directorate renders to support their smooth integration on campus.
The Head, Teaching & Examinations, Academic Affairs Directorate, Mr. Michael C. Hormenu, guided the students through the conduct of university examinations. He underscored the importance of the Grading System (GPA); Class Designation; Academic Policy & Examination Regulations; and Processes leading to the release of examination Results. Mr. Hormenu urged the students to take their studies seriously to avoid examination malpractices during end of semester examinations.
An Officer from the Office of the Dean of Student Affairs, Ms. Joyce Acquah, provided essential information on student matters and associations. She noted that students’ wellbeing is paramount to her office and encouraged them to come for Guidance & Counseling if the need arose. Ms. Acquah further urged the foreign students to join association on campus.
The Coordinator, Language Centre, Rev. Dr. Michael Owusu Tabiri, emphasized, that language skills are essential, therefore one must acquire its competency to excel in their programme of study. “Our focus is to help students to acquire language competency/skills, namely, reading skills, listening skills, speaking skills and writing skills,” he said.
Earlier, the SRC President, Mr. Harrison Amoako, together with his executives, welcomed the students and congratulated them for gaining admission to GCTU. He added that, the SRC offices are open to address their concerns.
An officer from the Industrial Liaison Department (ILD), Ms. Sandra Seke, elaborated on the key responsibilities of the Department. She underscored the need for students to take advantage of the numerous internships/National Service opportunities which the ILD advertises on their various school platforms to gain practical experiences with industries in their fields of study.
